You Will ReturnWritten by Ana Valladares, Guillermo Briales, Iman Amar Starring Adiós Amores. “You Will Return” is a very original film, whose characters do not want to make noise about their breakup, so they decide to take it completely backwards and celebrate a cheerful divorce party on the first day of autumn. The film presents a revolutionary vision of a couple that changes the customs, habits and stereotypes of separation by showing a modern, peaceful and anti-conflict relationship between two middle-aged people who are simply looking for happiness. It is a film about insecurity, about being in a couple after 15 years of relationship, about the midlife crisis and the doubts that it brings with it. The film also brings different shades of thought to many themes such as love, friendship and family relationships. Complex thought summed up in a simple phrase: “Volveréis”; As the saying goes: “Surely you will be together again” Or the same phrase, but with a question mark: “¿Volveréis?” How “Will you be together again?”. Two awards for one reality. Just like the verb “volver” which has two meanings: to turn (a page, a letter) or to return (to return). There are many references to Bergman, Truffaut, but also a nod to the director’s father (Fernando Trueba, a famous director himself), who happens to be a key character in this film, as he is the one who had the original idea of celebrating the breakup! In a way, Fernando Trueba is the father of the always controversial idea that led his son (Jonas) to make the film. For me, this film is very moving because it is not only very personal, as we have just seen, but also… It is also very honest. Very honest in the way it deals with midlife and relationship crises or the way Jonàs Trueba shares his own doubts throughout the film. It is like a circle of repetition, a circle of life, or a vicious circle so to speak, and as the film progresses, we begin to doubt whether it is a good idea or not, whether the editing will reveal to us that it is fiction after all. Jonàs Trueba plays with us as much as he is honest. For example, the director seems to share his own doubts about the editing and relevance of his film (the film that we, the audience, are watching!) by sharing the main characters’ opinions. doubts about their destiny as a couple or individuals through the editing of HIS film, which they both struggle to finish… as well as their relationship, which is coming to an end! This film is special because it is funny. It is a hymn to dialogue, to love and to respect. Its main characters almost never argue or fight. It is very modern in its approach to couples, very anti-conflict. The two simply share their thoughts honestly. Somehow they love each other in every step of their thinking despite the doubts that are everywhere, in a look, in a word or in a glance. To the question: are you happy? One answers yes and the other no, but both seem to regret their answer immediately after saying it. That melancholic tone coincides with the turning point of their lives, with what they are living, as they have to turn the page, start a new chapter, begin a new season just like this rather sad, uncertain summer that ends in Madrid. Little by little and thanks to the characters in a personal journey, we understand that life is like putting together a movie and everything can turn upside down: there can be a beginning and an end, an apparent end can mean a new beginning and, by one’s own decision, it can be everything else again. A beautiful, funny movie with many winks. I recommend it!
