Through the eyes of a strong-willed woman comes the extraordinary story of Irena Guta and the triumph of the human spirit over devastating tragedy as she risked her life to save a generation of Jews from the horrors of the Holocaust. Although this Canadian film had a much wider release in Canada than the typical Canadian film, its distributor, Elevation Pictures, for some reason decided not to release the film on a major marketing budget. As a result, the film performed poorly at the box office and was pulled from most theaters at the end of its third week. Through the eyes of a strong-willed woman, this is the extraordinary story of Irena Gut and the triumph of the human spirit over devastating tragedy as she risks her life to save a generation of Jews from the horrors of the Holocaust. Who would look for a group of Jews in a Nazi home? Irena’s Oath (2023) is a biographical film about Irena Gut Opdyk (1918–2003), a Polish nurse who gained international recognition for her humanitarian work. Yad Vashem honored him with the title of Righteous Among the Nations for risking his life to save twelve Jews.
She entered nursing school before the Nazi-Soviet invasion in 1939
Hiding during the invasion, she was found by Russian soldiers and beaten. and raped. Initially forced to work in a munitions factory during the German occupation, Guth was hired by Wehrmacht Major Eduard Riegemmer to work in the hotel kitchen, which often served Nazi officials, after learning that she spoke fluent German. The film, which premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival, depicts Irene’s anguish and fear, her relationship with her commander, and the young woman’s will to perform this heroic act and save the unfortunate people who were being ruthlessly persecuted. A story of survival and perseverance, which also spoke of friendship and how, despite the harshness and isolation of life, a good girl helps unfortunate and persecuted people at all costs.

Stories of survival of war, especially the Holocaust, are almost always shocking and moving, because they require a lot of effort to truly depict the suffering of Jews, who are constantly persecuted in concentration camps or during dangerous escapes. Those who managed to survive did not remain unscathed, experiencing many psychological traumas, often suffering numerous family losses or personal tortures. However, some managed to survive to tell their story, which they share with the world, to recognize those who disappeared as well as those who helped them survive. Allies and sympathizers also took great risks, giving different reasons why they could not help a Jew hiding from the Nazis. The film was shot in Konstancin-Jeziorna in the Masovian Voivodeship, Warsaw, the Masovian Voivodeship, Lublin in the Lublin Voivodeship and Modlin in the Masovian Voivodeship.
