In 1961, Bob Dylan, an unknown 19-year-old, arrived in New York with his guitar. During his meteoric rise, he connected with the music icons of Greenwich Village, culminating in a groundbreaking performance that resonated around the world. Timothée Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro and Edward Norton talk about their experiences portraying iconic figures of the 1960s folk scene. Timothée Chalamet himself sings in the film. When Bob first meets Woody Guthrie, he is wearing fingerless gloves while putting a capo on his guitar. In the return shot, the gloves are gone. Johnny Cash: Do You Want a Bugle? The Graham Norton Show starring Timothée Chalamet/Colman Domingo/Andrew Garfield/James Corden/Ruth Jones/Laufey Lín Bing Jónsdóttir (2024). To be honest, I didn’t have great expectations for a “perfect stranger”. Making a biopic about someone who is still alive and as special and unique as Bob Dylan can only be seen as a caricature. Yet somehow, Timothée transformed in a very natural and easy way and became Dylan. The time when Dylan was in his twenties, when the world started to know him as well as he knew himself, was well done. I liked the humor of the script, our audience had a genuine laugh throughout the two hours of filming. Monica Barbaro as Joan was a refreshing change! I hope she gets the recognition she deserves for this and other future opportunities. Elle Fanning was a somewhat disappointing choice for a character based on Suze Rotolo, who Bob thought was a stunning, impressive woman. I didn’t feel like Elle did her best, she was too much Elle Fanning. My favorite role, however, was that of Edward Norton as Pete Seeger. I don’t know the real Pete Seeger so I can’t make a comparison, but Edward Norton did a fantastic job in the film. I probably won’t watch this film again, but when I left the theater I got a good idea of the honor Bob Dylan will leave (and has already left) on this world. Timmy deserves an Oscar nomination and recognition for this role. I’m very excited to compare this film to the Bruce Springsteen biopic with Jeremy Allen White when it comes out.
